Unusual Places and Things to Eat in Mexico City

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Larry M. Lynch You travel to try out new things and have new experiences, right? So why not stretch your palate a bit too during your travels? Although here in Mexico City you can truly experience the exotic in dining, you neednt delve into the bizarre. Take a step a little off your normally beaten path with these suggestions. If you want to try something just a little different while eating out in Mexico City, try these. Here are two Cevicherias or raw seafood specialty houses: Mariscos PipiripauPalma No. 31Centro Historico Hostera Las PalmasPalma No. 30-ACentro Historico Ceviche is raw fish or seafood marinated in lime juice with vegetables and spices that is sort of chemically “cooked” by the acids. Usually served chilled, it’s a staple in many Latin countries, especially in seaports. Seafood cocktails and Caldos de Mariscos are featured here. The specialty of the house at Las Palmas is “Vuelve a La Vida”, ($60 pesos) a combination of fish, octopus, crab, shrimp and oysters that will “bring you back to life” for sure. Other raw, but marinated seafood cocktails served in a sundae glass are priced at about $30 pesos for your choice. Another noted specialty is the stuffed crab, served in its shell for $35 pesos. It’s a unique experience, check it out. Want to sample sushi? Would that be Japanese or Mexican sushi? No, just kidding about the Mexican, but you can sample a variety of made-before-your-eyes treats at this duo of restaurants. Later, you can learn how to make your own sushi rolls. Teriyaki SanRepublica de Uruguay No. 71 Local 2Centro Historico5510 - 9971, 5510 - 9556 A sort of “fast-food” style Japanese restaurant, their selection is a tad limited, but ready to go and budget-priced. You can choose from some pre-packaged combos that aren’t bad for the money. Staff is Mexican though so you lose a little in the translation. The setting is typical “fast-food” stark, although the location is conveniently in the thick of the Republic de Uruguay shopping scene. Sushi Roll5 de Mayo No.Centro Historico Metro: Allende An authentic Japanese sushi bar where you can match slices of raw or pickled seafood, rice and vegetables being turned into aromatic, colorful tidbits right before your dazzled eyes. Prices range from $10 pesos per piece to $60 or $70 for mixed combination platters. It gets pretty crowded around lunchtime, so come early or late afternoon and evenings for fewer crowds. If you’re truly ready for the real thing, and a unique experience at prices you can afford, this is the place I’d recommend. …Dine on Vegan Vittles? (…and we’re not just talking “rabbit food” here) Restaurant Vegetariano Filomeno MataFilomeno Mata No.Centro Historico5521 - 1895 If you haven’t tried vegetarian food why not give it a shot here where the selection is ample and tasty with entrees like Aguacate and Tomate Relleno, Papa al Horno con Cebollitas Aztecas and Croquettas de Elote con Puree de Papaya. As an old-fashioned “meat and potatoes” man myself, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised at the delicious entrees on the menu here. Open Mondays to Saturdays 8am to 8pm, Sundays 9am to 7pm. Soft Pop music plays in the background as you dine thanks to a live keyboards performer mornings and evenings most days. A truly delightful touch. Two additional vegetarian locations are: Vegetariano y DieteticoMadero 56 AltosCentro Historico5521 - 6880 Vegetariano RomaTuxpan 24Colonia Roma5564 - 7930 Los MagueyesPalma 10-A (between 5 de Mayo and Tacuba)Centro Historico5518 - 4073, 5521 - 5191 The waitress placed a platter on the table in front of me. A generous slice of grilled beef lay next to a pool of gravy-colored refried beans. An ample green salad of tomato, lettuce, shredded carrot and cucumber filled one side of the platter, but it was the beef’s topping that was the center of attraction. Slender, deep green strips with a slightly pungent aroma lounged mixed with small, bright red whole chilies. A steaming short stack of corn tortillas filled a saucer beside the platter. So this was the “Beefsteak con Nopales”. The Maguey is a type of succulent plant. If your Botany is rusty that means it’s sort of a kind of cactus. Nopales are a staple here and as you’d expect, a number of dishes such as Nopales Au Grautin, and Costilla con Nopales, feature them. Young, tender ears of the Prickly Pear cactus are harvested, cleaned and shaved of their spines and thorns before being grilled or fried. The good value entrees here are priced from $21.50 to $42.50 pesos. A number of restaurants and “Taquerias” prepare them in dishes for their distinctive flavor. They can also be juiced and mixed with other fruit and vegetable juices for a flavorful, healthful beverage. Bottoms Up! Dulceria de Celaya5 de Mayo No. 39Centro Historico Metro: Allende5521 - 1787 If it’s sweet Bunky, they’ve probably got it. (Well, not me, but candied fruits and vegetables, yes.) And if they don’t have it, you can order it and they’ll get it or make it for you. Boasting that they’ve been in business for 125 years, baskets, special sweets and candied everything are in this glass-walled little shop. The window displays alone are enough to peak your interest. Try some candied Yucca or pumpkin - fantastic! Products are sold by weight so you can order as little or as much as you’re game for. A definite “Must - Stop” on your “Offbeat Mexico City” tour. Your sweet tooth will thank you, and thank you, and thank you. Enjoy! Los JarochosLocal 21Mercado de Alimentos San Camilito The yelling and screaming started as soon as I stepped through the entranceway, “Over here Sir! We have the best”, “what would you like? We have it over here!” “You like the best home cooking? Try ours, it’s ready now. You won’t be sorry!” “My Mother cooks our ham herself. It’s so tender you’ll cry with pleasure at the taste.” A dozen cooks and garroteros assailed me all at once. Each trying to lure me into eating at their establishment. Everything looked good. Everything smelled good. They were insistent. They begged. They pleaded. They implored. When all that didn’t work, if there was time, they cajoled. “You’re passing up the best food in the market!” “You should’ve eaten here, now you’re going to get heartburn!” Welcome to the Mercado de Alimentos San Camilito, located on one side of the boisterous Plaza Garibaldi. I settled at the seafood stand of Norberto Uscanga Ortiz and enjoyed Arroz con Pulpo (seasoned rice with generous chunks of octopus mixed in-20 pesos), Mojarra frito (fried Mojarra -a fish) with a mixed tomato, lettuce and avocado salad, a small loaf of fresh-baked bread (38 pesos for the platter) and washed the whole thing down with a couple of nearly frozen Coronas (10 pesos). I waddled out of there an hour an a half, 11 Mariachis and three good stories from Norberto later, a stuffed and happy man. When you go, please give him my regards. You’ll feast on some of the choicest seafood platters in town. Want more exotic dining tips and tales? Pharmaceuticals: The Next Frontier in America’s War on Drugs

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=David_Westbrook] David Westbrook Americas war on drugs, which has been fought in the opium fields of Afghanistan and the cocaine plantations of Columbia, will have to reinvent itself to combat what is set to be Americas biggest drug abuse problem, pharmaceuticals. One in five Americans, nearly 48 million, have used prescription drugs for non-medical purposes at least once in their lives. The current past month misuse rate among Americans is 6.2 million. According to a recent white paper by Carnevale Associates, this rate of use is already higher than the historical highs of both cocaine and heroin epidemics. For some, the road to illicit use of prescription medications starts innocently. After a car accident, back injury, or, even, a mental/emotional breakdown a physician prescribes medication for a legitimate use. Over time, tolerance builds up so that more and more of the drug is needed until a state of dependence is reached. At this point, there is no easy way to get off the drug, and stopping can involve painful withdrawal symptoms. Some doctors have been known to become afraid and cut their patients off at this point. Patients have been known to steal prescription pads, or visit numerous doctors to get the drugs they have become addicted to. However, contrary to popular belief, it is not older adults or any adults who are most likely to abuse pharmaceuticals. In the past decade, abuse of prescription meds among youth has been growing at an alarming first-time use rate of more than fifty percent each year. In 2002, the latest year for which there are statistics, approximately 2.5 million Americans misused prescriptions for the first time and 44% of them were under the age of 18. Unfortunately, as the media fixes its gaze on the methamphetamine problem; and the Office of National Drug Control Policy spends much of its time focusing on Marijuana the opportunity to address the pharmaceutical addiction and abuse is being missed. While certain steps have been taken they have been tentative. The ONDCP has drawn up a strategy for addressing synthetic drugs, but no serious media campaign to educate Americans about the problem has been undertaken. Nor has any pharmaceutical company been brought to heel for manufacturing drugs with high abuse potential even when alternatives may exist. The next battle in Americas war on drugs must draw a bead on pharmaceuticals. The ONDCP must be willing to launch the same type of hard hitting ad campaigns against prescription drug abuse as it has against, marijuana, ecstasy and cocaine. The FDA must not be afraid to sanction drug manufacturers who continue to make unsafe drugs where safe alternatives exist. Pharmaceutical manufactures must become better citizens and spend the research and development dollars to make safe and effective drugs, rather than taking the easy way out. This new phase of the war on drugs, without easily targeted foreigners to blame for Americas drug abuse problems, will take unwavering political resolve, corporate citizenship and ingenuity. Even then it is likely to take years before the trend of increases in prescription medicine abuse and addiction can be reversed. Common Prescription Drugs of Abuse: Opioids: these are synthetic versions of opium. Intended for pain management opioids are the most commonly abused prescription drugs. OxyContin (oxycodone), Vicodin (hydrocodone) and Demerol (meperidine) are the most popular for abuse. Short-term side effects can include pain relief, euphoria, and drowsiness. Overdose can lead to death. Long-term use can lead to dependence or addiction. Depressants: These drugs are commonly prescribed to treat anxiety; panic attacks, and sleep disorders. Nembutal (pentobarbital sodium), Valium (diazepam), and Xanax (alprazolam) are just three of the many drugs in this category. Immediately slow down normal brain functioning and can cause sleepiness Long-term use can lead to physical dependence and addiction. Stimulants: Doctors may prescribe these to treat the sleeping disorder narcolepsy or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, ADHD. Ritalin (methylphenidate) and Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine) are two commonly prescribed stimulants. These drugs enhance brain activity and increase alertness and energy in much the same way as cocaine or methamphetamine. They increase blood pressure; speed up heart rate, and respiration. Very high doses can lead to irregular heartbeat and hyperthermia. 2005, David Westbrook About the Author: Dave Westbrook has worked in the field of crisis intervention and addictions for several years. Free Ringtones

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Seth_Miller]Seth Miller One of the best ways for people to personalize their phones is to use distinct ringtones. Today, gaining access to ringtones is both easy and affordable. People can easily buy ringtones from a number of sources, and there are also quite a number of sources where people can get free ringtones. There are numerous websites that offer free ringtones in all kinds of formats that include monotone and polyphonic ringtones. However, people should be careful in picking the website from where they would get ringtones because there are some websites that are run by unscrupulous people who may be out to give people more than just ringtones. Moreover, there are also websites that are run by people who are only out to make a profit out of other peoples artistic work without paying royalties. People should watch out for websites that offer ringtones as part of scams or other unscrupulous activities. Examples of such are the websites that ask people who download ringtones to pay for a membership fee or for other payments in exchange for access to the ringtones they offer. Other examples are the websites that install malicious software like spyware and annoying pop-up ads, which can cause problems to the computers of people who download ringtones from these websites. There are also websites that offer free ringtones without paying the royalties due to the artists who made the songs from which ringtones are based or copied. For people who wish to personalize their phones, getting distinct ringtones can help them to do so. There are a lot of websites that offer ringtones for free, but people should be careful, as there are websites that perpetrate illegal activities through the free ringtones that they provide. Going Beyond Diffusion

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

By Gerry McCarthy Beyond Diffusion This advanced diffusion system is designed for continuous operation and holds a full oz. bottle of essential oil. It’s Patented nebulizer breaks up essential oils into micro-mist and blends it with the air you breathe. Air entering the diffuser is first scrubbed with a hygienic filter that intercepts pollen, bacteria, dust, smoke, smog, dander and viruses even smaller than HEPA filters can catch. This filter never needs cleaning and lasts one year or more. Selector switch allows continuous operation or intermittent cycle of 5 minutes on, 25 minutes off to maintain desired environment while saving precious oils. Adjustable nebulizer also regulates amount of essential oil diffused. Dimensions 7 1/4″ x 5″ x 3 3/4″. 110V AC. The patented nebulizer propels a thin micro particle mist of essential oils into your environment. By revitalizing the air with their antiseptic action, the oils become an important part of your health maintenance program. It diffuses essential oils through cold diffusion. It is very user friendly. Turn it on in the morning and it will run intermittently throughout the day. Adjust the cap to increase/decrease output. Fragrances an area up to 1,000 square feet, covering an extra large room or multiple rooms. Benefits of Diffused Essential Oils Essential oils when diffused, can be the best air filtration system in the world. They will: 1. Purify by removing metallic particles and toxins from the air. 2. Increase atmospheric oxygen. 3. Increase ozone and negative ions in the house, which inhibits bacteria growth. 4. Destroy odors from mold, cigarettes, and animals & more. 5. Fill the air with a fresh, herbal aromatic scent. Source-Dr. Gary Young (Internet) Remember-All essential oils are not the same. Some are better germ killers than others. The Essential Air diffuser Models are comprissed of: Compressor This provides the air power to project the scents. Plug it in to start and remove the plug to stop (Basic unit, all others use interal timers. Green Nebulizer & Amber Bottle The nebulizer turns the essential oil into a spray, and then a mist, which circulates on air currents. The cap rotation allows you to decrease or increase the output. The black filter inside the green nubulizer helps turn the spray into a mist. The cap also helps turn the spray into a mist. You could operate the nebulizer without the black filter, however this would increase the power of the spray, but reduce the mist. Gerald F. McCarthy holds a patent on the unique diffuser used in all ESSENTIAL AIR models. Over the years McCarthy of Leyden House has accumulated seventeen patents in the field of energy and health related products. Three Ways to Transition to a New Career

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Steven Hall As a Certified Personnel Consultant working for Find Great People International in Greenville, South Carolina, I receive telephone calls from people who are considering a career change. For some, transitioning to a new career is easier than others. Some professionals already possess a foundation of skills to make the transition easier. Ill give an example. An unemployed network engineer and hobby electrician decides to become an electrical contractor for new construction. His transition might be easier because he needs minimal training to enter the new field. But others require training, or additional schooling, which can sometimes be costly. Strategy for Changing Careers Its best to take a strategic approach when changing careers. The first step is identifying a career of interest to you. Then, visit jobsites like Careerbuilder.com,Monster.com, and Hotjobs.com and search for job postings by keywords or titles relating to your newly desired career field. Next, read through the job postings identified, analyze them, and try to determine the knowledge, skills, and abilities employers are searching for in this field. Once youve researched your chosen career, deepen your knowledge through class work or mentoring with a friend whom you respect and whose experience might relate to that field. In order to advance in your field of choice, an undergraduate or advanced degree may be necessary. Speak to a Recrutier Another way to make an effective career change is to contact someone like myself a recruiter or headhunter who specializes in your desired field. The purpose of your call is to gather information about your chosen profession. For example, at Find Great People International, we have recruiters specializing in manufacturing, information technology, health care, apparel, finance and accounting, and professional temporary staffing. It may be helpful to jot down a list of questions before your call. When I speak to someone about changing careers, the individual usually acknowledges they do not possess the skills or experience to do the job yet — but they are eager to break in. I evaluate their skills, based on a series of questions. Sometimes theyll have a foundation for the new career and thats a starting point. Education: a Positvie Step Schooling or training is a wise first step for many who shift careers, provided they have the money to pay for it. There are times when I recommend a national training center with locations throughout the U.S. Or, since I specialize in the IT field, Ill suggest a technical training institute, or a technical college that offers supplemental training. Some certifications and trainings in the computer field can range between $8,000-10,000. This may seem steep, but the truth is most places of employment will not hire you without some sort of training. Step Into Your Field in a Better Job Market There is a third, bolder angle, which works better in a more robust job market. Simply investigate companies in your field of interest, contact them directly, and ask them if they are hiring entry level. If you are lucky enough to speak to a hiring authority, or someone in a position to be helpful, use the time to sell yourself on the transferable characteristics you possess as an employee. Transferable Characteristics as an Employee: complete projects on-time and within budget work well with people reliable and dependable follow-through skills computer skills Highlight Former Profession Do not overlook the generic qualities of your former profession, when presenting yourself to a potential employer in a new field. These include verbal and non-verbal aspects of communication, and are considered portable skills. If you feel you are lacking in some of these key areas, then think about acquiring these skills through training. I have often recommended something like Dale Carnegies course, How to Win Friends and Influence People. If the cost for this course is prohibitive, then consider acquiring some books or audio tapes which help to build these skills. To maximize success in your new field, I suggest that during the education or retraining process, you become a member of a professional organization. Plug yourself into an association, either local or statewide, related to your specific industry niche. Go to the monthly meetings. Get to know people. Start selling yourself by way of relationships and friendships. By the time youve finished your education, youll have a network of people who will be aware of your skills and availability. Select any one of the three methods Im recommending, or combine aspects of all three. Youll be well on your way to landing a new position. Your new field might not open up to you right away, but if you are persistent about it, you should be successful. About The Author During the past 14 years, Steve Hall has been a consultant with Find Great People in Greenville, S.C. Fast Home Equity Loans - Getting Approved Online

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carrie_Reeder]Carrie Reeder A home equity loan is a great way to put extra cash in your pocket. Homeowners obtain home equity loans for a variety of purposes. Perhaps you need to make some home improvements or renovations. The extra money is also perfect for paying college tuitions or taking a long overdue vacation. If you are looking to get a home equity loan, consider applying online. What are Home Equity Loans? Home equity loans are one of the quickest and simplest ways to obtain cash. Owning your home provides you with several money options. You may refinance your home to receive cash. If you want to avoid creating a new mortgage and paying closing costs, a home equity loan is a suitable option. Using your home’s equity as collateral, you may receive a loan for any purpose. This is called a second mortgage. Thus, your home will have two liens. If you default on either lien, the lender of your first or second mortgage has the right to foreclose. To avoid foreclosure, you must repay both loan amounts. Getting the Best Home Equity Loan Online If applying for a home equity loan, you have many options. To begin, it would be a smart move to contact the lender of your existing home loan. If your credit is good and your payment history is excellent, it is easy to negotiate a low rate home equity loan. For the most part, home equity loans involve fixed rates. However, it is possible to get an adjustable rate. If your credit is bad, your lender may not approve you for a low rate. In this case, you should explore other options. Using a Mortgage Broker for Home Equity Loan Unfortunately, many homeowners do not compare mortgage rates before closing on their home loan. However, the only way to ensure that you are getting the best rate is to shop around. Even if your existing mortgage lender offers seemingly super low rates, it does not hurt to obtain quotes from other lenders. You may be surprised by other offers. If you have bad credit, comparing rates is especially important. Because your options are limited, some lenders will charge much higher fees. To avoid lender scams, submit an application through a reputable online mortgage broker. These brokers will match you with sub prime lenders that readily offer low interest home equity loans to bad credit applicants. Compare and contrast the home equity rates and loan terms before making a final decision. Here are our [http://www.abcloanguide.com/homeequityloan.shtml]Recommended Home Equity Loan Companies Online. How To Meet Women In Nightclubs

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

By Rod Cortez Nightclubs. For the inexperienced male or one lacking in onfidence, nightclubs can be one of the most intimidating settings. Now add the extra variable of wanting to meet women there, it adds fuel to the fear fire. For some men, all they know is the nightclub scene and think that is the best place to hook up and meet women. For others it’s an unknown place with bizarre social rules. For others it’s a place they’ve never been to and prefer to stay away from. If you want to learn how to meet women in nightclubs then you have to understand both the reality and the fantasy elements of nightclubs. The fantasy part is that men know that nightclubs, especially the “hot” ones, have more attractive women in one place then almost any other public venue. Some nightclubs actually go out of their way to keep the female to male ratio as close to 50/50 as possible because they know if there are more women there, then more male patrons will come. Nightclubs can be a lot of fun because there’s drinking, dancing, and meeting new people. Now let’s take a look at the reality of meeting women in nightclubs. A woman spends an average of 2 hours getting ready before going out to a nightclub. Why? There are several reasons for this but a very common one is that they know there are going to be other attractive women there and they know they have to look their very best if they are going to get any attention from men. Men typically go to nightclubs to hook up, whereas women typically go to nightclubs to have fun with their girlfriends and to seek validation from men. There’s a small percentage of women that go to nightclubs to hook up with that “hot” guy, but most women don’t go there for that. There’s another thing to think about when going to nightclubs to meet women. About 8 out of every 10 women that go there are not what I would call long-term relationship material. Many of the women that go to nightclubs are going there to seek validation, to get their egos stroked, are in their partying phase, and generally would not make a suitable long term mate. You’ve got to keep that in mind when you set out for a night out. I’ve met some fantastic women at nightclubs because I’ve learned how to sort out the freaks, the flakes, and the attention whores.A major mistake men make when they want to meet women in nightclubs is they go there with an agenda. That agenda is usually to get laid, hook up, or find a girlfriend. The problem with that mindset is that it leads to needy and sometimes desperate behavior. I see a lot of men walk in to a nightclub and their main focus is to scope out the talent. They need to learn how to be more subtle about it. Another needy behavior is walking up to a woman and offering to buy her a drink. Wait a cotton-pickin’ minute….she hasn’t even done anything to deserve a free drink yet. I never buy a woman that I’ve just met a drink, she has to earn it first by having a two-way interaction with me. So when I walk up to her and approach her it might be as simple as saying “Hi, my name is Rod and yours is?” I’m qualfying her to see if she is interesting enough for me to stick around. Men generally do it the other way around where they try to impress her or bribe her with an offer of a free drink. Women know this and the really hot ones even come up with lame rules such as “we never pay for drinks”. I’ve dated many attractive women ranging from college coeds to corporate women and most of them had similar rules. An attractive woman knows she can go out at night and never have to pay for a drink or even pay to gain entrance. To meet women in nightclubs you must learn how to stand out. A powerful way to stand out is to do your research before you go to any nightclub. Find out who owns the nightclubs, read reviews about it online on sites like Yelp.com, and when you do go, show up early and get to know the door people and the rest of the staff. I’ve gone out to new nightclubs and even by my second visit I already have people calling me by my name because I gave them a large tip, bothered to learn their name, and even invited them over my apartment for a “happy hour” or mixer. When the staff knows you it makes a big impression on the women there because it naturally increases your social status. They assume you’re somebody important. The #1 thing you can do in a nightclub setting is to go there with two goals in mind: to have fun and to meet new people. It really is that simple. When you show up, grab your beverage of choice, walk around the nightclub once or twice just to see what’s going on, and then find a spot and get ready to mingle. One technique you can use is while you’re walking around the nightclub is to make a few comments to different groups of girls. You can even ask them how they’re doing and if they’re having fun. Once they give you their answers you can say “Great!” and then walk away, leaving them wondering who you are. It sets it up nicely to talk to them later.
