Free Report From Harvard Medical School: UNDERSTANDING DEPRESSION

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Charles Donovan Harvard Medical School just published a special report titled Understanding Depression. Early recognition of the signs of depression is more common than in the past. New treatments, such as drugs targeted at specific changes in brain chemistry, can cut short otherwise crippling episodes. A variety of drugs and therapies can also be combined to boost the likelihood of a full remission. This report provides information on these and other helpful therapies. Reading it and sharing it with loved ones might help improve your lifeor the life of someone close to you. And, because depression remains a leading cause of suicide, the information might even be lifesaving. I think that this report is very informative, provides easy-to-understand explanations about this baffling disease and discusses various treatments. I know first hand that knowledge is so crucial to coping with this mental illness. This valuable report was prepared by the editors of Harvard Health Publications I am offering this fifty-page report FREE to purchasers of Out of the Black Hole: The Patient’s Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression. Chapter include: Understanding depression What is major depression? What is bipolar disorder? What causes depression? Cured of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

By N. Johnson Like many other deadly diseases, Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) has no known cure. However, one does not have to live in discomfort and a fear of the disease consuming them. Medications and treatments are available to help ease the unpleasant symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease. Although some do not see the purpose of a medicine without a cure, many people give thanks that they are able to continue their lives in an orderly manner. There are many different ways in which Primary Pulmonary Hypertension patients may receive treatment. They may receive oxygen, diuretics, or calcium channel blockers. Each treatment is different and each treatment should be considered. Although there are many conventional ways to ease the symptoms of PPH, there also a few forms of treatment that have not yet been approved by the Federal Drug Administration. The simple procedure of administering oxygen to a pulmonary primary hypertension patient can be very beneficial in relieving difficulties in breathing. In addition to relieving strenuous breathing, administering oxygen also helps to relax the lungs artery muscles. Another advantage to receiving oxygen is that the pressure in the lungs will decrease to a reasonable level. When an excessive amount of fluid builds up around the heart, Primary Pulmonary Hypertension patients receive diuretics. When patients receive diuretics, the doctors must be extremely careful. The reason such precaution must be taken is, the patient must not get entirely dehydrated. With an already poorly functioning ventricle system, dehydration can cause the blood to stop being pumped to the lungs. Another method of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension treatment is through calcium channel blockers. An example of this would be nifedipine, a muscle relaxant. Nifedipine specifically relaxes the muscles that are found in the walls of blood vessels. Even though this form of treatment appears quite pleasant, it often is not. Although the right side of the heart is able to function more efficiently, the blood pressure may be decreased throughout the entire cardiovascular system. Thus, it may create somewhat of an unpleasant situation for the PPH patient. A couple forms of treatment still in the experimental phase include the inhalation of Nitric Oxide and the use of prostacycline. The purpose of inhaling nitric oxide is to relax the lungs blood vessels. When inhaling the nitric oxygen, the rest of the body does not feel the effects. Working In Iraq: Is It For You?

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

By Douglas Hanna The US Army Corp of Engineers and numerous private companies are still looking for people to help rebuild Iraq’s infrastructure. In fact, one Web site currently has four pages of jobs in Iraq. And the pay can be very good. Some civilian contractor jobs start at $80,000. Others pay even more. A truck driver earning $30,000 in the US may be able to get a job in Iraq paying $70,000, $80,000 or even $90,000 a year. Iraqi jobs come with tax benefits Just as important, housing and meals are usually provided, and if you work overseas for a year, $80,000 of your income is excluded from US income taxes. (Note: For complete details on this tax exclusion, see Section 13.3 of the IRS Tax Code, Aliens and U.S. Citizens Living Abroad: Foreign Income & Foreign Income Exclusion). Iraq job postings are usually available online and, in many cases, you can apply for these jobs online. Sites you might want to check out include dangerzonejobs.com, jobline.net, and jobsearch.about.com. As of this writing (early Septermber, 2006), I found jobs available for mechanics, subcontract administrators, buyers, pest control technicians, legal advisors, truck drivers, telecommunications people, and maintenance workers — to name just a few. Companies with jobs in Iraq include Halliburton, KBR (a Halliburton subsidiary) Dyncorp, Parsons Project Iraq, CIS (Critical Intervention Services), Titan Corp., Bechtel, Fluor, Koll, Wackenhut, General Dynamics, EG&G Technical Services, and many others. The US State Department is also looking for employees. The Iraq Reconstruction Management Office (IRMO) wants to hire highly skilled and motivated United States citizens. IRMO’s mission is to support the sovereign, democratic rights of the Iraqi people to govern themselves, defend their country, and rebuild their economy. These jobs fall under Civil Service and, as such, offer excellent benefits, including generous health plans, thrift savings plans, life insurance, annual leave, sick leave, and a student loan repayment plan. Iraqi jobs There are a number of positions posted as of this writing that require duty in Iraq. A partial list of these jobs include: Advisor ($62,000 to $97,000), Logistics Program Coordinator ($62,886 TO $97,213), Contract Specialist ($62,886 to $97,213), and Field Services Officer ($62,886 to $97,213). Another branch of the US Government, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), is currently spending $3.3 billion on contracts with consulting firms that help promote entrepreneurism, improve agriculture and manufacturing efficiency, stimulate investment and develop information technology skills. That’s the good news. Here’s the bad news. In an article on the Web site www.dangerzonejobs.com dated Feb. 14, 2005, one recruiter says you’ll be working eight- to 12-hour days in a 120-degree desert populated by scorpions, camel spiders and people looking to kill you. You’ll be dusty and dirty most of the time. You’re shown slides of what your residence — a prefab metal container — looks like when it’s blown apart by mortar fire. You learn that about 60 other company employees or subcontractors have been killed — and one is missing. Still willing Still, 1 in 10 applicants for jobs with the Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root, based in Houston, remain willing to take those well-paying truck driver, food service, laundry and maintenance positions in Iraq. This despite extensive media coverage of the kidnappings, beheadings and suicide attacks on civilian workers there. And there’s no doubt that civilians are prime targets. Besides the roughly 3,200 U.S. military casualties so far, there have been more than 300 casualties among civilians working for U.S. contractors, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Two of the largest contractors staffing for jobs in Iraq, Halliburton and KBR. The big picture is that billions of dollars have been allocated to construction and reconstruction projects throughout Iraq. Salaries are high and the lure of making more money that one could sometimes make in years at home is hard to resist. So, is a job in Iraq right for you? If you have a sense of adventure, are not afraid to take a risk and would like to double or even triple your wages for a year, the answer just might be yes. Do you play golf? If you do and you’d like to reduce your handicap — and have a great vacation — all at the same time, you just can’t beat North or South Carolina. Pre-Wedding Jitters

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

By Eric Hartwell Marriage is a very big step in ones life. The decision to get married is a decision thats likely to change your life forever. Youll stop being single and, in the words of Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, youll become one of the smugly-married. Youll stop thinking for one and start thinking for two. After the priest proclaims you man and wife, your life will never be the same again. Thus, its only normal that you get those pre-wedding jitters. Pre-Wedding Jitters Pre-wedding jitters, cold feet, last minute anxiety you know all about them. Youve been with the guy for several wonderful and blissful years. And though youve turned the idea over and over again in your head like a burger patty that you want properly cooked when it comes down to it, you cant seem to take that first step down the aisle. Youve always been sure that shes the one girl for you yet you cant get your lips to move and say I do because you know that shes the one girl for you and thats the problem one the word keeps repeating in your head, over and over again. One and only one never again shall you have another girl. Never again because shes the one and if you have another one, then youll have broken your vows and Gods thunder will strike you down. Theyre Natural But you know that these jitters are inconsequential. Youve thought it over and youre sure. Youre just nervous and your anxiety is getting the better of you. Dont worry thats perfectly normal. Pre-wedding jitters isnt some sort of sign that the two of you arent meant to be. Its caused by all the stress youve been through in the months that youve planned your wedding. Couple that with the uncertainty of the future and youve got yourself pre-wedding bedlam. Its not hopeless, however. You can do something to stop this malady. The Cure for Cold Feet If youre having the jitters while youre looking at yourself in the mirror, dont be afraid to talk with someone. It may be your mom or your best friend, it doesnt matter. Dont be afraid to divulge that youre nervous and having second thoughts. Letting all your feelings out will clear your head. Sometimes, you just need someone to remind you, somebody who will tell you, Hey, this is the best day of your life, turn that frown upside down. If youre having the jitters while youre walking down the aisle, count from one to ten and breathe deeply. This will help you regain your calm. If that still doesnt work, try to recall the reasons why you agreed to marry him or why you chose her. Remember all of your good times, even your bad times, remember all youve been through, and remind yourself why he or shes the one for you. Remind yourself how wonderful he or she is and how much you love him/her and how much he or she loves you back. The one youre marrying is the love of your life; dont let a few jitters ruin your special day or the rest of your life. Dieting and Exercising - Results all the time!

Monday, January 14th, 2008

By Greg Ryan Dieting and Exercising Results all the time! To be successful in keeping to an exercise program, you going to have to define results. Results for most mean weight on a scale, a dress size, the number of pounds on a bench press, and your waist size. I challenge you to think in abstracts. Results, all the time? Yes! It just may not come in the form you are looking for on the surface. You can break the type of results into three categories: emotional, internal and external. EMOTIONAL I believe more important than waistline measurements, personal bench press records or reading whatever the scale says, is what exercise does for you emotionally. For me, it was self-confidence and self- esteem. I will do this for life because I do not want to go back to the person I once was. For you, it may be a feeling of being productive. Or because you are doing something for you and no one else. INTERNAL Internal results come in the form of vital signs, such as lower blood pressure, and a decrease in body fats, cholesterols and triglycerides. Of course, these are important, but do not look just at the typical attributes. EXTERNAL These are results you are accustomed to achieving. It is something we can see or touch. Pants are fitting loser, arms are looking toned, and numbers on the scales are going down. At times it is a lot easier to get motivated by those things we can see, rather than all that is going on inside. Personally, I have seen more people stick with a program if they focus on the emotional and internal results, more than the external. The outside results may motivate you in the beginning, but it is the INSIDE OUT approach that keeps you going. Greg Ryan is a high profile fitness expert and former employee of Kathy Smiths. The History of Velveeta Cheese

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

By Mayoor Patel What is Velveeta Cheese? The United States Food and Drug Administration categorized it as pasteurized process cheese spread. A company in New York first made it in 1918. This company, the Monroe Cheese Company had employed a young cheese maker by the name of Emil Frey. He was trying to help the company he worked for find a way to dispose of the excess whey. Whey was a waste product that was made as a result of the cheese making process. Frey was working on another idea when he accidentally stumbled on a combination of the whey and another cheese that when mixed together created a smooth, almost velvety cheese material. That is of course why it was given the name Velveeta Cheese, because of the consistency. It could not be called cheese, but there was something about it that all the cheese companies wanted. Each one, using its own brand name, sued the others to be the only one permitted to make this popular new product. In the end Kraft Foods, which had their own brand, simply bought out the others. So in 1927 they became the owners of Velveeta Cheese. Since then they have taken the product and sold it throughout the United States and Canada. They have added different spicing to it to make more varieties of it. Over the years they have made changes to the consistency, changing it into more of a spread. In the 1950s they played with different sized packages trying to see what appealed to the consumer. In 1984 Kraft launched a Velveeta Cheese macaroni product. This was followed the next year by cheese slices. Keeping with the times in 1990 they introduced a microwavable version. As recently as 2003 they introduced a salsa dip. Even to this day the process cheese spread know by thousands as Velveeta Cheese is a controversial product and one that is kept a close eye on. Some say that it has less cheese than when it started out. Others feel that it does not matter as long as it tastes good. I wonder what Emil Frey would say. Anniversary Gifts - Twelfth Anniversary

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

By Michael Russell For those of you who are looking for a great anniversary gift for your twelfth wedding anniversary, you are in luck. This year offers some of the finest gifts you can get for your wife. Guys, you may have a little trouble getting something you’re going to like, but let’s not forget who this big day is really for. We’re going to dive into some of the loveliest gifts this side of heaven. Where were they for number ten? The traditional and modern gifts for number twelve are both show stoppers. We’ll kick this review off with the traditional side of things. Silk or linen. You got it guys. This is where you get to buy your wife something really sexy for your anniversary. Actually, maybe you guys do get something out of this one. Anyway, we all know what’s made out of silk. That’s right, sleepwear. If twelve years of marriage hasn’t quite taken the spark out of your love life yet, there are plenty of items you can get that are made out of silk. For starters, if you want to be a little on the conservative side and not appear too obvious as to your intentions, you can get your wife a pair of silk pajamas. That’s right, tops and bottoms. She’ll love them. Not only that, but she’ll really see that you love her as well. Of course, if she knows that you only have one thing on your mind and there’s no point in hiding it, you can get her a nice silk teddy or nightie. Both will have more than the desired effect on both of you. Just remember, these gifts, especially if they’re well made, are not cheap. Some sleepwear can go for as much as a couple hundred bucks. So guys, I sure hope it’s worth your one night of fun. If you’d rather stay out of the bedroom, which is a good idea for some of you guys, you might want to go the linen route and get your wife a nice linen tablecloth for the dining room table. You can spring for one that’s rather on the plain side or go all out and get one with some really nice patterns on it. Just be prepared to open up the wallet for this purchase. Linen tablecloths can go for quite a bit of money these days. Make sure you check the cleaning instructions on these before you make your purchase. Remember, you’re going to be spilling food all over this gift. If you want to go the modern route, this is where you can really splurge guys. The modern gift is pearls. That’s right. And please, don’t go for the fake pair. Go for the real thing. Yes, women can tell the difference between and fake pair of pearls and a real pair so don’t even think of trying to put one over on her. As you can see, the twelfth anniversary is one where you can get an anniversary gift that really says; “I love you”. So take advantage of it. When number 25 comes around, you’ll be glad you did. The Myth of Fast Weight Loss

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

By Arina Nikitina You will be surprised to find out how many people are actually looking for a fast weight loss program. Why fast? Well, first of all, most of us are impatient. We live hectic lives. We want results now, we want to notice the change right away, and we don’t want to work hard to achieve those results. Most people eat what they want all year round, prefer TV over exercising and dream about how next week (or month/year) they are going to start a healthy lifestyle. Suddenly one day they realize that it is just 2 weeks left before they have to go to a Christmas party or that summer is coming up and they want to look good in the new bikini. Usually around this time I get hundreds of emails - all of them pretty much the same “I have this event coming up in two weeks. I need to lose about 10-15 pounds. What is the fastest way to do it?” Of course TV and Internet is full of commercials that promise you to lose 20 pounds in two weeks. They even show you tons of pictures of fit, smiling people with perfect bodies. Just pop a magic pill 3 times a day and you will turn into a supermodel right away. Sounds good, right? I hate to disappoint you but this is just another scam created to get your money. There is no such thing as fast weight loss. I’m sure I’ll get some infuriated replies like “That can’t be true! My friend Maggie lost 16 pounds in two weeks doing Low carb diet!” Well you are in for another disappointment. Your friend didn’t lose any fat. She lost water and muscle. Human body is a well coordinated working mechanism. It has no idea that you’ve decided to fit in a size 8 dress and doing some new fad diet. It thinks you are starving. Its too concerned about survival to allow us losing weight fast. Instead your metabolism slows down to conserve the energy. As soon as you’ll start eating normal food you’ll gain all of your weight back and some extra pounds in addition to that. To make it simple fast weight loss is always followed by fast weight gain. No exceptions. In addition to that when you lose weight too fast, your skin does not have enough time to shrink, it will become loose. The right amount of weight that the average person can lose in one week by eating correctly and doing exercises is around 2-3 pounds. That is a healthy, safe, effective amount to lose. Only that way you can get long lasting results. I know it is not as fast as many people would like to lose weight, but think about it how long did it take you to gain weight? I bet you $1000 dollars you didn’t gain 20 pounds in two weeks. It is only logical, that your body will not allow you to lose 20 pounds in two weeks. Sorry! I’m trying to save your money here, so repeat after me “There is no machine, no special diet, no special workout program, no special pill or special patch that will help me to lose weight fast and healthy at the same time”. Repeat it to yourself every time you have an urge to buy some “quick fix” no matter how appealing it sounds. Remember people who have created these commercials are professionals who know what you would like to hear. Don’t let them fool you. Just try to eat right and work out. Be consistent. Make one little step at a time and you’ll be surprised how far you can actually go. Liposuction: The Superhighway to Your Dream Figure

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

By Shane Woods The world today is perceived by minds that are constantly shaped by advertisements in media. The modern gauges for beauty are the models that strut on the runways, the cosmetics and clothes that you use, and yes, even the size of your waistline! A sadder statistic: 65 percent of the American population is overweight. Since beauty is now more like a contest on whos the thinnest, more and more people are resorting to different ways of burning fat. Some (a dismal number) resort to the time-tested way of losing weight: exercising; others turn to diet pills and crazy diet programs; while others choose to undergo liposuction. Liposuction is also called lipoplasty, suction lipectomy or liposculpture. The areas that are usually remodeled by liposuction include common problem areas such as thighs, the abs, buttocks, back of the arms and the neck. Most clients are women. Although it is widely accepted that exercising is the healthiest way to reduce weight, it still leaves some fat deposits even after strenuous workouts. Liposuction is the answer in instances such as this. Before the procedure is started, the physician and the patient agree on what areas the former will operate on. The operation itself is very simple that is why only local anesthesia is required. Not everyone can undergo this procedure no matter how simple it is. There are certain factors that the physician would need to check before he gives the go signal to operate. First, the candidate must be above 18 years of age; Second, she should not have any health problems (in short, healthy! People who have diabetes, heart problems or any type of infection are not allowed); and third, she should have done everything like exercising and dieting so that only the stored fats are to be removed by the surgeon. Once these things are checked, a consent form is signed by the candidate on the day that the surgery will be performed. The antibiotic is given an hour before or after the surgical procedure. While the patient is standing, markings are placed on the areas where liposuction would be performed. Some doctors take before and after photographs to document the improvement. At the operating table, betadine is applied to the area and the local anesthetic is then injected. After which, a very small incision is made where the cannula (hollow tube) will be inserted. IV fluid could be given and some devices monitor the heart beat, blood pressure, and level of the blood oxygen. No pain will be felt by the patient throughout the entire operation. She will just feel a scraping sensation. After the surgery, stitches are determined by the attending physician. Some of them do not put stitches to ensure that all the unwanted fluids are taken out of the small incision. To expedite a patients recovery, it is imperative that he or she observes the following: 1. Drink enough water for rehydration. 2. Dont drink alcohol (before and after) the operation. 3. Do not swim for a week. 4. Exercise and eat nutritious meals once healed. Although liposuction maybe the fastest way to achieve your dream waistline, keep in mind that it should not be your alternative to exercise. It should be there, only, to complement your daily workout and diet program. Besides, why jump into the bandwagon of slim enthusiasts when you can be a real beauty blessed with whatever shape God has bestowed you with. Yes, you can always improve that God-given shape but let no one dictate.
